The Coalition to End Unconstitutional Tax Foreclosure invites Allied Media Conference to join us for a press conference and celebration, as we demonstrate what reparations for victims of illegal tax foreclosure can look like.

Thursday, June 14 at 2:00 pm, Sonja Bonnet and her family will be officially celebrating the move to their new home. Wayne County took their previous home in an illegal foreclosure. Bonnet her family and the other anti-foreclosure activists who worked to get the new home see the move as an example of reparations that are owed other families who have lost their homes because of unconstitutional property tax assessments and poor advertisement of the Poverty Tax Exemption.

Thousands of families in Detroit have had their property assessed at values higher than legally allowed by the Michigan Constitution and to add insult to injury were never informed that they could apply for the Poverty Tax Exemption. Because of this double whammy, from 2011 to 2015, the Wayne County treasurer foreclosed upon about one in four Detroit properties for nonpayment of property taxes. Over 100,000 working families have lost their homes, and many Detroit neighborhoods have been devastated. Bonnet and her family consider themselves fortunate but believe the thousands of other families across Detroit also deserve compensation for the illegal seizure of their homes.

Come learn more about the movement to end illegal foreclosures and how you can support it.

This event takes place at the intersection of Beaverland and Majestic in Detroit, 48239.
