J.M. Nimocks is an artist and arts organizer from the south side of Chicago. They are most concerned with constructing realities that are utopian and healing for queer, disabled communities of color as a form of community organizing. Nimocks graduated from the University of Washington-Seattle with a Master’s in Social Work focusing on Public Policy & Administration. While in Seattle, they began their DJing career and have been organizing parties in the Pacific Northwest as accessible forms of cultural preservation. During their Fulbright year, Nimocks will be investigating the ways that sound articulates race and gender for queer, Afro-Brazilian communities and how these articulations affect civic engagement. At the end of their Fulbright, J.M. will create a sound-based map and digital archive of their work to continue mapping the sounds of queer, Afro-diasporic communities around the globe.
