Maria Agui Carter is an award-winning filmmaker, founder of Iguana Films, and Assistant Professor at Emerson College. A former staff producer for the flagship PBS station WGBH in Boston, she has won George Peabody Gardner, Warren and Rockefeller Fellowships, and served as a visiting scholar at Harvard, Tulane, and Brandeis. Her historical feature documentary REBEL won a 2014 Erik Barnouw Award for best historical films in America, and her latest work is currently on PBS, the Broadcast and trans-media series SCIGIRLS. She is currently working on the PATRICIA ESPARZA PROJECT, a documentary about a Latina woman incarcerated for the murder of her rapist by her boyfriend. Next she will direct her narrative feature script The Secret Life of La Mariposa, about a teen immigrant girl who escapes her abuse through a fantasy world but must return or face her own extinction, based on her experience growing up undocumented. Maria is the former Board Chair of NALIP and currently serves on the Writer’s Guild of America, East Diversity Council.
