Mariano Avila

WGVU
Mariano Avila is an award-winning journalist with WGVU Public Media (NPR/PBS). He has made a career of bringing voices from the margins to those who need to hear them. Over the course of his career, Mariano won awards including a nomination for an Emmy. He also spent seven years organizing for international human rights efforts and has done considerable work connecting marginalized people through the power of story. Mariano was born in Mexico City, Mexico but his life and work have taken him from refuge camps in Palestine, to Sacred Stone Camp in Standing Rock. Mariano is a graduate of Calvin College, has an MFA in creative writing from Warren Wilson and An Executive Certificate in Leadership, Organizing, and Action from Harvard Kennedy School.
